EU Parliament: powered two-wheelers play a significant role in sustainable mobility.

The European Parliament has adopted MEP Wim van de Camp’s “Report on the implementation of the 2011 White Paper on Transport: taking stock and the way forward towards sustainable mobility”.

In the report motorcycles, scooters and mopeds are highlighted as a way to solve the problems in urban transport by tackling congestion and parking problems as well as providing a solution for light logistics. The report also states that the specific design and benefits of powered two wheelers should be taken into account and reflected in EU transport legislation and guidelines.

This is a step forward for riders as it represents the first time the EU Parliament have formally adopted a pro-motorcycling policy position.

Together with our colleagues in FEMA, (the Federation of European Motorcyclists’ Associations) we in MAG Ireland have long argued that powered two wheelers – that’s motorcycles, scooters and mopeds to you and me – are part of the solution, not the problem.

Just as important, the report calls for consideration of the unique challenges faced by riders when roads are being designed, upgraded or maintained.

In and of itself, the report carries no legislative authority but it nevertheless represents a step in the right direction because it becomes part of the framework within which EU transport planners must act.

We in MAG Ireland extend our thanks to our colleagues in FEMA for their efforts in ensuring the views of Irish riders were heard at the EU and we look forward to legislation which supports rather than marginalises the use of motorcycles, scooters and mopeds.
