“Continuous Insurance” Proposal – Not just yet.

A MAG Ireland member from Co. Cork has been in touch with the office voicing concern about a recent piece in the Irish Times which suggested that there was a proposal afoot to require all vehicles to be insured regardless of whether they are used on the road or not. This follows the introduction of a similar scheme in the UK recently. The article is here;

MAG Ireland is not aware of any formal publication of such proposal at this time, however we have written to the Department for Transport seeking clarification owing to the concerns voiced to us by people who – for example – have project bikes which they may be working on over an extended period of time.

Per the article in the Irish Times, the Motor Insurers Bureau spokesman points out that the databases here are not yet sufficiently accurate or current enough to support such a scheme. While this not not rule out it’s possible introduction, it does in effect mean it’s a case of “not yet”.

MAG Ireland will be keeping a watching brief on this one.
