“First Bike on Scene” (FBoS) Initiative

Update: Since this post was published, the private company behind FBoS in Ireland, B.I.K.E.R.S. Training has established their own web site. For the most up-to-date information on the FBoS course itself, as well as venues and dates, please refer to the B.I.K.E.R.S. Training web site at:

First Bike on Scene is a specific course for the Motorcycling Community which aims to provide you with immediate care skills in the event of you coming across a road traffic collision. These skills include:

  • Safe approach and management of an accident scene
  • First aid and CPR
  • Management of head and neck (c-spine) injuries
  • Logroll
  • Safe helmet removal in special circumstances.

Initially developed by the North West Ambulance Service in the UK, the course is now available through the sole licensees Rodge Byrne and Nick Coward from B.I.K.E.R.S Training. Both healthcare professionals themselves, but also motorcycle enthusiasts, they are acutely aware of the risks bikers face on the roads every day.

All too often bikers hear ‘sorry, I just didn’t see you!’ following a near-miss. According to the Road Safety Authority (Road Collision Facts 2009), motorcyclists account for about 2% of road vehicles, but almost 11% of all fatalities. These figures correspond with research in the UK.

First on scene? Would you know what to do?

This one-day course aims to take away the fear of approaching and dealing with an accident, potentially making a huge difference to the injured person. Following the course, successful participants will be issued with a certificate by the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, UK, which is valid for 2 years. Over two hundred Irish riders and drivers have taken part on the course to date.

We look forward to meeting bikers from all over Ireland!
