New penalty points offences in 2012

MAG Ireland has been made aware of a report in today’s Irish Independent which outlines a range of new penalty point offences due to come on stream in 2012.

Of interest to Irish motorcyclists is the proposal to introduce points for the failure to wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle. Previously this offence was subject to a fine, but not to penalty points. While MAG Ireland recognises that almost nobody rides on the roads without a helmet, the introduction of points for not wearing a helmet is notable in the context of the current RSA proposals for mandatory high visibility clothing.

The article goes on to suggest that the points for common offences will be increased, and attributes the following to Minister for Transport, Dr. Leo Varadkar, T.D.

The minister also confirmed that he is considering an increase in penalty points for speeding and mobile-phone use.
