National Campaign Updates

Direct Access
Following the NC meeting of May 26th the restoration of Direct
Access has been made a main campaign aim of MAG. Representations
at TD clinics will be organised first in Limerick and will also
be coordinated in the rest of the country. The aim is simple, to
get the Direct Access option of the European driving licence
directive implemented in Ireland.

Ride to Work Day
Thursday June 14th is National Ride to Work Day. A day for
motorcyclists and moped riders to show that riding to work is a
sensible choice for everyone. It's cheaper, safer and more
environmentally friendly than everyone thinks and you don't get
stuck in traffic. This is all about persuading people who already
own bikes to use them more and to take the 'bikes are right'
message out to a wider audience.

MAG is talking to the national media about Ride To Work Day but
the most important part will be the events. MAG local groups
covering areas with large cities will be organising activities to
highlight Ride to Work Day. Bikers breakfasts, organised runs on
the way to work, journey surveys and so on. Contact your local
group for more details.

Petition on 110% road tax increase
MAG's road tax petition now has hundreds of names. We need to get
this into the thousands so if you've not signed one yet then
please do and pass it on. MAG has distributed copies of the road
tax petition to all bike shops, clubs and local MAG groups. If
you have not seen a copy then please contact your local group,
the MAG office or download one from the MAG website or from
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/IMAG_INFO/files

Please return the signed copies to the MAG office before June
30th.

Motorcycle Awareness
Thousands of copies of MAG's motorcycle awareness info sheet have
been distributed during May (international motorcycle awareness
month). MAG is working on bike stickers with the awareness theme.

A copy of the awareness info sheet can also be downloaded from
IMAG_INFO.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/IMAG_INFO/files
or from the MAG website.

Road Hazards
A MAG document entitled "Motorcyclist issues in Road Design and
Maintenance" has been produced for use by local groups working on
road related issues. See the MAG website or contact the office
for a copy.

Insurance
To highlight the scandalous situation with Irish bike insurance
for the under 25s an Insurance victim of the year competition is
being run. Details in RoadRunner. Work continues on encouraging
insurance companies to increase choice and the MIAB to
investigate the current situation.

Crash barriers
In response to the planned crash barriers for the M50 MAG Ireland
has submitted the FEMA Crash Barrier report to help ensure that
the barrier being built is both necessary and takes motorcyclist
safety into account.

Local Group Update

MAG Dublin : Demo on Road Tax Increase

MAG Dublin held a highly successful demo on May 25th outside the
Customs House. On hearing of the demo the DOE agreed to meet with
MAG. TV3 covered the demo in their evening news. Around one
hundred motorcyclists supported the event and showed the strength
of feeling. Liaison with gardai went well and passers by were
leafleted on the aims of the demo. A letter of protest was handed
in to the DOE and

Work is continuing in MAG Dublin on the Bikers Are Voters
brochure and a DOE meeting covering the buslanes issue was
attended in May.

MAG Kerry
MAG Kerry is working hard on organising the Stop the Rot rally in
August. Local Groups are encouraged to contact MAG Kerry or
Catherine Donnelly to put their name down for marshalling.

Motorcyclists living in Kerry are encouraged to support the local
group meetings. MAG Kerry is currently without an email address
so any help with that also appreciated. Ring Baerbel at (087) 297
7992 for further info.

MAG Kildare : Roads & Mondello Stand
MAG Kildare is working on the roads conditions issue and is using
the MAG document "Motorcycle Issues in Road Design and
Maintenance" to highlight the main areas that need improvement.

MAG Kildare ran a stand in Mondello on May 12/13th gathering a
large number of road tax petition signatures and distributing
motorcycle awareness information sheets.

MAG Limerick : Direct Access
MAG Limerick will be working on coordinating the campaign for
Direct Access.

Local Groups: Please advise the Group & Clubs Liaison Officer of
your activities and events. There is a report template in the
Reps Resource Kit. Contact Catherine Donnelly at (01) 457 0634,
maglink@m...

Membership discount. Three months free.
MAG members paying by standing order now receive three months
free membership. Paying membership by standing order ensures you
always have a current membership. This is required by the Emerald
insurance scheme and is necessary if you want to vote in
elections to your local group or at the AGC. Please contact the
office for a standing order form or download from the MAG website

International Update

Scottish politician lodges diesel spill motion
SNP MSP for North East Scotland, Brian Adam has tabled a
Parliamentary motion congratulating Aberdeen Motorcycle Action
Group on their recent rally to highlight the danger of diesel
spills on the road. Commenting on his
motion Mr Adam said:

"Diesel spills cause bikers a great deal of problems and
unfortunately many serious accidents have occurred because of
fuel patches on our roads and Aberdeen MAG are to be
congratulated for highlighting these dangers.

"My motion also calls upon the Scottish Executive to investigate
all means to reduce diesel spills on roads so that serious
accidents can be averted. I believe that there are plans to
introduce European legislation to adapt diesel fuel tanks, but I
believe that action is needed now. The government should also
look at mounting a safety campaign to highlight these dangers to
lorry drivers and other diesel vehicle users and urge them not to
overfill their tanks as this is the main cause of spillage."

Brian's motion reads as follows - That the Parliament welcomes
the recent well organised and well attended demonstration in
Aberdeen by bikers to highlight diesel spill accidents and calls
upon the Scottish Executive to investigate all means to reduce
diesel spills on roads. Brian Adam, Member of the Scottish
Parliament for North East Scotland

UK Advisory Group on Motorcycling delivers interim report

For Irish riders (particularly those dealing with the Dublin
Tranportation Office) this news item from the UK may read like
something from another planet rather than an adjacent island:

UK Transport and Environment Minister Lord Whitty has welcomed
the publication of the Interim Report of the Advisory Group on
Motorcycling, and highlighted the substantial contribution that
the group has made in assisting the Government to develop its
motorcycling policy.

Lord Whitty said: "The Government has long recognised that
motorcycles have a role to play in a national transport strategy.
Now, aided by the Advisory Group, our policies are reflecting
motorcycling as an integrated form of transport and we have a
better understanding of the needs of motorcyclists. With the help
of the Advisory Group, the Government is focusing on some key
issues for motorcycling. In particular, we are examining the
impact of powered two-wheelers on congestion and are exploring
their environmental effect. There can be little doubt that mopeds
and small motorcycles can offer environmental benefits."

"We want local authorities to consider specific measures to
assist motorcyclists in making integrated journeys, including
parking, interchange facilities and appropriate road maintenance.
We are also implementing a package of measures to improve the
safety of motorcyclists.

"This interim report sets out how we are looking at motorcycling
across a wide range of issues. We have made good progress. With
the continued help of the Advisory Group - not least those who
actually ride motorcycles - we will carry on developing our
policies so that we take proper account of motorcycles for
integrated transport."

Since establishment of the AGM, the UK Government has advised
local authorities to consider in their Local Transport Plans
measures to assist motorcyclists including parking, interchange
facilities and appropriate road maintenance. The UK Government is
also implementing a package of measures to improve motorcycle
safety, including: improving training and testing for all learner
riders; providing guidance for people returning to motorcycling
after a break and people riding as part of their work; ensuring
the quality of instruction; helping drivers become more aware of
the vulnerability of motorcyclists; and promoting improvements in
engineering and technical standards.

The Department of Environment, Transport and the Region's
Planning Policy and Guidance Note 13 also advises local
authorities to consider motorcycles as an alternative to the car
for some journeys, particularly where public transport is limited
and walking unrealistic.

The full AGM report has been added to the Reps Resource Kit CD
(May 2001).
